Sixty years ago Yuri Gagarin became the first human to fly into space. Despite becoming the first, he and his fellow cosmonauts have remained shrouded in mystery. While Project Mercury was well documented through tv, film and books, the Soviet space effort moved in secrecy. In the late fifties and early sixties, The USA and USSR were in a race to be the first to put a man in space. In early 1961 both countries had arrived at the moment where they were prepared to launch a man into space. The question remained who would be first. While Gagarin was first, it could just as easily been Alan Shepard. There were some quirks of history that allowed the Soviet Union to be the first in space. Gagarin comes alive in this book. We learn about his background and who he was as a person and not just a cosmonaut. I really enjoyed this book. Plenty has been written on Project Mercury and the Original Seven. Now we learn about their competition. For the reader who has never read about Gagarin and his flight this book will be a wonderful reading experience. For the reader who can name all thefirst 6 Soviet pilots, not so much. There is a lot of new information about the person's connected with the missions but most of the factional info has been covered elsewhere. In a brief spoiler alert, Gagarin got off the transfer bus and pissed against one of the bus wheels. To this day all astronauts and cosmonauts perform this ritual on the way to the launch pad. Strangely, the author neglected to include this detail.
